CEED Student and Alumni Testimonials

CEED Students

Jasmine Tadros - Class of 2027, Mechanical Engineering

Hello! My name is Jasmine and I am a first year student pursuing mechanical engineering at UCLA. I chose UCLA not only because it has a great engineering program, but also because of the amazing weather, vibrant social life, and the CEED program. CEED has allowed me to meet some of my closest friends and to have a study group in all of my classes! As a first year, the summer Bridge program gave me confidence in my transition to college and helped me perform well in all of my classes. Being in CEED has also allowed me to connect with company representatives who were also in CEED, which highlights the strong alumni network and connections that this program provides for its students. I am very grateful for the resources CEED provides, and I don’t think I would have had such a positive first year experience if I didn’t join CEED. Plus there’s donuts every Friday!

Lorenzo Cova - Class of 2026, Mechanical Engineering

My name is Lorenzo Cova and I’m a 2nd year Mechanical Engineering major from the desert of Palmdale, California. I was recruited by CEED going into my freshman year, and looking back I’d say joining this program was one of the best choices I’ve ever made. CEED guided me through a whole new chapter in my life, providing me with academic resources, scholarships, and overall a “second family” with the early friendships I made. One of the biggest impacts CEED has had on me is the professional development that the program provides. Through preparation from industry-related events held by CEED and organizations tied to CEED, I was able to land a great internship with Northrop Grumman in Roy, Utah. I’ve also been working for CEED as Webmaster and office assistant since the start of my freshman year and this job has been a huge help with feeling financially stable. Everything that CEED does for me and fellow underrepresented students constantly makes me feel like I’m exactly where I’m meant to be, here at UCLA.

Renee Hlomador - Class of 2025, Chemical Engineering

My name is Renee-Randette Hlomador, and I am a first-generation Ghanaian-American Chemical Engineering major here at UCLA! It is my third year at UCLA, and I have loved my experience so far! I chose UCLA because the Chemical Engineering program at the Samueli School of Engineering was very enticing and academically rigorous. I was also excited about the faculty’s research in the department and couldn’t wait to immerse myself in the culture of academia. I was also very excited about exploring LA. The CEED program, definitely made me feel like I belonged here at UCLA. It offered me a community and served as an avenue to make me feel less isolated on this huge campus. I was introduced to students who had similar backgrounds to me and we have since bonded over our shared experiences. The CEED program has also offered me a multitude of professional development avenues, such as Corporate Round Table, Corporate Gamesmanship, etc. These events gave me the opportunity to talk to industry representatives. I have since developed my confidence, public speaking skills as well as my social and interpersonal skills. Through the CEED program, I was also introduced to UCLA’s chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE). NSBE has served as my home away from home on the UCLA campus. It is an environment where I get to be socially, as well as academically challenged. The overwhelming sense of community present in NSBE is what inspired me to hold the position of NSBE’s Pre-Collegiate Initiative Chair. In this role, I am fortunate to be able to provide opportunities to students from underrepresented communities to experience what it is like to be a part of the NSBE family here at UCLA.

Christophe Charles - Class of 2024, Electrical Engineering

I am a fourth year Electrical Engineering major from Los Angeles. For me, the all-around environment of UCLA really stood out. You have some of the most rigorous academics and arts mixed with some of the best sports teams in the nation all wrapped into a spirited environment, both in Westwood and the rest of Los Angeles. I chose UCLA because I felt that it was going to provide me the opportunity to further all of my interests both in engineering and beyond. At UCLA you can make the most of your experience through clubs, student groups, and connecting with people with different perspectives. CEED has helped immensely in providing me opportunities in the community where I can be successful as an engineer. With counseling sessions to help structure classes, tutoring nights to help with classes, and corporate round tables to connect with professionals and recruiters. CEED has truly shaped my career as a successful engineer.

CEED Transfer Students

Sebastian Cervantes - Class of 2025, Electrical Engineering

Hello, I’m from Oxnard, California and this is my second year (transfer) at UCLA studying electrical engineering. To be frank, UCLA’s reputation and school spirit is what stood out to me at first. I knew that UCLA offered more than just a strong engineering program, and I valued the social/extracurricular opportunities that exist on this campus. I chose UCLA because it seemed like the perfect balance between academic rigor, extracurricular involvement, and community building. CEED has had a positive influence on my UCLA career; it has provided me with a community of friends, professional development, and academic support. Being part of CEED put me in touch with students in the same major and classes, which led to a strong academic support network. Similarly, it connected me with student clubs, such as the Society of Latinx Engineers and Scientists (SOLES), where I have expanded my leadership skills by taking on board positions. CEED has also provided me with professional development with events like the Corporate Roundtable, which set you up with company recruiters to give you feedback on your resume and elevator pitch.

Lein Lein Pasache - Class of 2024, Mechanical Engineering

I’m from Lima, Perú, and I moved to California eight years ago. I transferred from East Los Angeles College (ELAC) in fall 2021. I’m a third-year non-traditional transfer student majoring in Mechanical Engineering class of 2024. One of the things that stood out to me about UCLA was its engineering clubs. I’ve gained much hands-on experience through their clubs and have had the opportunity to connect with diverse people. I chose UCLA because of its Engineering Transfer program, which allowed me to build my network through its summer workshops. In addition to this, the CEED program made me feel welcome and helped me build a sense of community with the Summer program. Most of my close friends are also CEED students. Another factor that influenced my decision was its location; I wanted to be exposed to a new environment that was not my own but still close to my family in Downey. The CEED program has been very supportive throughout my experience at UCLA. Thanks to them, I was able to have constant support through the stressful enrollment dates and have resume reviews that allowed me to secure my first summer internship last year.

Angel Reyes - Class of 2024, Mechanical Engineering

My name is Angel Reyes, I’m from Los Angeles, California. I am a transfer student from East Los Angeles community college and I am currently a 3rd year transfer mechanical engineer. UCLA was it was always on the top list of schools to go to for engineering. I remember taking a field trip when I was a child to campus and I always wondered what it would be like to attend this university and now, I’m living that dream. I transferred during the end of Covid so I wasn’t able to take a tour of the school, but after doing some online research I discovered that UCLA had so many engineering clubs with a lot of hands-on experience and that was a top priority for me. But what gave me the final push into accepting the UCLA offer was the CEED letter, believe it or not I was dead set on attending USC until I read the great opportunities and assistance that CEED offered. CEED has played a major role in shaping my career. Whenever I need help with my homework, the structured study nights are right around the corner and the tutors are such a big help. Not only that but when it came to my career, I was able to practice and enhance my communications skills with professionals in industries from their corporate roundhouse table, which helped me land my first internship after my first year at UCLA. Now I feel prepared and ready to answer any interview questions that recruiters throw my way.

Awa Kologo - Class of 2022, Civil Engineering

Hello! I am from Burkina Faso (West Africa). I transferred from San Bernardino Valley College in the Fall of 2020. My major is Civil Engineering. The civil engineering program is what stood out to me the most. Before attending, I have heard from many sources that UCLA professors are highly experienced and that some of them work/ have built businesses in the field they teach. This was very important to me because outside of class I wanted to learn about what actually happens on the field and I was able to experience that through a couple of my professors. Before choosing UCLA, I was more inclined to choose UC Berkeley which also had a great engineering program. What made the difference for me was how involved people at UCLA were. Even before confirming my choice, different programs reached out to me for mentorship programs, clubs on campus, etc. Finally, UCLA had more opportunities and resources to help students succeed. This college does not only focus on educational excellence but also works on post-graduation success. Working at the CEED office, I have acquired professional experience that is still serving me today. Also, through the CEED events, I had the opportunity to connect with a lot of companies representative. I have learned to tailor my resume based on companies’ demand for the best representation of myself and finally how to effectively sell myself during a potential interview.

Now, I work for the LADOT as a Transportation Engineering Associate at the Signal Design section. To generalize what I do, I design signal plans for intersections. Let’s say that a particular intersection needs a protected left turn signal. My role is to propose where that signal will be implanted based on field checks and investigations that allows me to know the real condition of that intersection. I am also currently working on passing my EIT exam, which I encourage every student to take as soon as possible.
