2022 Freshman Important Messages

Important Emails Sent to Freshman in 2022

  • Below is a list of all emails sent by CEED Counselor Sherry to incoming CEED Freshman in 2022:

May 13, 2022

Hey UCLA CEED Incoming Freshmen  —  Alex, Alexander, Andrea, Andrew, Andy, Angel, Angelica, Ashley, Chidera, Christopher, Citali, David L, David LG, Daysi, Dereck, Disleiry, Eduardo, Elizabeth, Erick, Esther, Hanna, Hector B, Hector GM, Hugo, Issacc, James, Jasmine, Jenna, Jeremy, Jesus Perez, Jesus Plata, Johannan, Joy, Kaitlyn, Katelyn, Lorenzo, Luis, Maritza, Mark, Melanie, Nicole, Nyala, Olana, Rika, Rogelio, Ronaldo, Ryan, Savanna, Selena, Shantell, Steven, Trevani, Victor A, Victor B, Wanda, Yahir, and Yasmine!!   Our 2022 UCLA CEED Freshman Class!!  Go Bruins!!

Welcome to our CEED Family!!  I have several important announcements and encourage you to share this message with your Parents/Guardians as well:

=   HOUSING  —  Early last week, I submitted all your Names to the UCLA Housing Office for “CEED Priority Housing”  —  so your applications will be processed earlier than most other incoming UCLA Freshmen!   But this only works if you applied for On-Campus Housing before the May 1st Deadline (the application and fee must be received before their deadline).   All new students are strongly encouraged to live on Campus.   If you didn’t apply and want to now consider living on Campus, please contact me right away.  Please note the Housing Office informed us that Freshmen will most likely be assigned to Triples due to heavy demand for UCLA On Campus Housing.  Besides, over 85% of all dorm rooms are triples.  With CEED Priority Housing, you can choose to live in the dorms if you want until you graduate.   It’s a great way to make new friends and costs less, too!    If you would like to consider having CEED ROOMMATES, please let me know so I can connect you with each other.   It’s very helpful to have roommates who are Freshman Engineering Majors to study with.   Many of our Current CEED Students choose to be roommates with each other.

=  CEED FRESHMAN ORIENTATION and NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION  —   We have submitted all your Names to the UCLA Orientation Office for them to hold “CEED Priority Spaces for UCLA Freshman Orientation Session #102” (July 20-22).    We will contact you all very soon with more formal info about our July 19th CEED Freshman Orientation and how to sign up for that.   But in the meantime, you can learn more about UCLA Orientation and start to register for UCLA Freshman Orientation on MyUCLA beginning Monday, May 16th, at 3:00 p.m. PDT.

If you are able to do so, we strongly encourage you to CHOOSE TO REGISTER FOR SESSION #102 (July 20-22) because it immediately follows our 40th Annual CEED Freshman Orientation on July 19th.   This way, you can make one effective trip to UCLA and enroll in your Fall Quarter Courses much earlier than most other freshmen (CEED Fall Priority Registration).  You can also select the “Early Arrival” option for UCLA Orientation so you can stay on Campus after CEED Orientation is over and move into UCLA Orientation right after that (more efficient, one trip).

Please note that the UCLA Orientation Office is ONLY holding spaces for CEED Freshmen for SESSION #102, and that everyone will need to REGISTER ONLINE for UCLA Orientation. If you can’t attend Session #102 but need to attend a later date, please make sure you don’t conflict with your mandatory CEED Summer Programs that run from August 28 – September 9 (Freshman Summer Bridge for all majors, and the CISE Program for Computer/Electrical majors).  So please DO NOT REGISTER for Sessions 108-110 because they ALL CONFLICT WITH CEED SUMMER PROGRAMS.  Note that UCLA Orientation Sessions get booked up really fast.    IMPORTANT  —   CEED DEADLINE TO APPLY ONLINE FOR UCLA SESSION # 102 IS JUNE 30 (but don’t wait until then).   After that, remaining spaces will be given to other Non-CEED Freshmen.   So please apply right away and don’t miss the June 30th Deadline!

UCLA Freshman Orientation’s website is http://newstudents.ucla.edu/ and then click on the link for “New Student Sessions” and then “First Year Students.”    You may also want to consider the “Early Arrival” option for Session #102 so that you can stay on Campus and transition into the UCLA Freshman Orientation shortly after the end of our CEED Freshman Orientation that Tuesday, July 19th.    Your Parents will also be invited to attend our CEED Freshman Orientation.   Our Parents often find CEED Orientation answers pretty much all of their questions (UCLA Family Orientation is good, but just general and not specific about Engineering).  We’ll send you more info about CEED Freshman Orientation soon, as our agenda will include in-depth presentations on: Freshman Summer Bridge, the Summer CISE Program, the Engineering Disciplines Research Course (Engr 87), Academic Planning, and Fall Quarter Course Recommendations. We plan to distribute the Freshman Summer Bridge and CISE Application Packets around that time.

Remember that you CANNOT ENROLL IN FALL QUARTER CLASSES until you complete the official Samueli School of Engineering Advising, which takes place during UCLA Freshman Orientation.  Students who don’t attend any UCLA Orientation have to wait till practically the end of summer to enroll in Fall classes.   Please let me know right away if you can’t attend Session 102 and which Session you are thinking about attending instead.   I want to make sure there are no conflicts and that you don’t get billed for changing session dates.   Remember that CEED has no priority for other Orientation Sessions, and they will fill up quickly.

Please also note that the bill for UCLA Orientation Sessions held in July won’t be due until September, and they also have info about financial assistance on their website.   And by mid September (probably 9/12), the Fall Quarter Financial Aid is disbursed.

=  MATH AND CHEM PLACEMENT EXAMS  —  The UCLA Freshman Orientation website also has a link about “Placement Exams.”   Please make sure to review this page and read the section about the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (AWPE). In addition, we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE EVERYONE to take the online MATH PLACEMENT EXAM during the testing period of May 1 – July 1.   And all Majors except Computer are required to take the CHEMISTRY PLACEMENT EXAM.  Most of you will be enrolling in Fall Quarter Math Courses which require taking and passing this placement exam.   So please don’t wait or hesitate  — whether or not you end up needing it, just PLEASE TAKE THIS MATH EXAM so it’s in your records.  It should be quick and not that difficult.   By the way, the Math AP info on the Orientation website is NOT the same as Engineering Requirements (Engr is stricter).   And nobody is allowed to enroll in Chemistry 17 or 20A without taking the Chemistry Placement Exam.   Regarding those other placement exams (Foreign Language, Music, etc), note that the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering does not require any of these.

=  OTHER SUMMER PROGRAMS  —  You may have heard about the Freshman Summer Program, College Summer Institute, etc.   These are good general programs, but please note that they are NOT DESIGNED FOR ENGINEERING STUDENTS.   More importantly, they DIRECTLY CONFLICT with our CEED Freshman Summer Bridge Program and CEED Computing Immersion Summer Experience (CISE) Program.    As an ENGINEERING MAJOR and CEED Student, it would be a wise academic decision to participate in those programs specifically designed for Engineers.   If you accidentally signed up for FSP or CSI, please contact their office and cancel right away.

=  CEED FRESHMAN ORIENTATION  —  As mentioned above, our 40th Annual CEED Freshman Orientation will be held on Campus on Tuesday, July 19th.  We will provide you with more info soon, and your Parents/Guardians are invited to join us.   CEED Orientation is free, as are Freshman Summer Bridge and CISE.

That’s it for now.   We covered a lot of important topics here. Please share this message with your Parents and contact me (sherry@seas.ucla.edu) if you have any questions.   Don’t forget the CEED Deadline to register for UCLA Orientation Session #102 is June 30th, so please register right away starting Monday.

Take care, have a great weekend, and as always….   Go Bruins and Dodgers!     – Sherry Hormozi, Your UCLA CEED Counselor    =)

June 8

Hey UCLA CEED Incoming Freshmen!   Hope you’re all doing well.   I’ve been receiving a variety of questions and want to remind all of you the following:

=  SAVE THE DATE — CEED FRESHMAN ORIENTATION  —  We will be contacting you all soon about signing up to attend our 40th Annual CEED Freshman Orientation, which will be held on the UCLA Campus next month, Tuesday, July 19th.    Major topics include CEED Overview and History of Success, Freshman Summer Bridge and CISE Programs, Engineering 87 Fall Research Course, and Fall Quarter Recommendations.   Your Parents/Guardians will also be invited to attend.   There is no cost except for parking.

=  REGISTER FOR UCLA NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION  —  They are holding priority spots for CEED Freshmen in Session #102 only, but there are only a few spaces left!   Students can choose to stay on Campus after CEED Freshman Orientation and then move into UCLA New Student Session #102 later that day.  Just make sure to include “Early Arrival” in your registration.   Remember it’s during UCLA New Student Session that Engineering Freshmen meet with their official Engineering Student Affairs Advisor and then have clearance to enroll in Fall Quarter Classes on Day 3 of Orientation.   If a student does not attend any UCLA Orientation, they still have to meet with Engineering Advisors, but can’t enroll in Fall Courses until mid September.   Here’s the link for more info and to register:  https://newstudents.ucla.edu/programs/first-year-students/
=  DO NOT REGISTER for UCLA Sessions 108, 109, or 110.   These all CONFLICT with your required CEED Freshman Summer Bridge intensive 2-week academic excellence program and the CISE Program for Computer/Electrical Majors.  If you will not or cannot be in Los Angeles until right before our summer programs begin, I would suggest registering for Session 107.   But if you can attend Session 102, most of your CEED Family will be there.   =)
=  Costs for UCLA New Student Sessions are not due until September, and by then, the Fall Quarter Financial Aid is disbursed.  https://newstudents.ucla.edu/programs/first-year-students/#tab-id-4
=  TAKE THE MATH AND CHEM DIAGNOSTIC EXAMS BY JUNE 30 —  I strongly encourage EVERYONE take the Math Diagnostic Exam no matter how much math background you have.   Unless you are a current UCLA Student, none of you know what the UCLA Mathematics Department expects of its students, and it is so critical to begin UCLA Engineering at the correct Math level and establish a strong foundation.   And unless you are a Declared CS/CSE/CompE Major, you must also take the Chemistry Diagnostic Exam, which is required by the UCLA Chemistry Department for enrollment in their courses.  Please get these both done right away.  Here’s the link, and note that the School of Engineering has higher standards than the College of Letters of Science about AP Scores and does not consider most of them, as I will discuss at CEED Orientation.  So please everyone, TAKE BOTH EXAMS at your earliest.    https://newstudents.ucla.edu/programs/first-year-students/#tab-id-8
=  SAVE THE ON-CAMPUS DATES FOR FRESHMAN SUMMER BRIDGE / CISE PROGRAM  —  Sunday, August 28 until Friday, September 9.   We will further discuss Bridge and CISE at CEED Orientation.   These are official UCLA Summer Sessions classes that yield UCLA Units and are required for all CEED Freshmen.   Summer Bridge and CISE are intensive instructional programs to prepare all of you for academic excellence in your Fall Quarter Math and Chemistry or Computer Science courses.   These programs are no cost.
=  HOUSING  —  We have submitted all of your names for CEED Priority Housing if you applied for On Campus Housing, which we highly recommend.   If you are interested in considering fellow CEED Freshmen Roommates, please let me know.
=  EMAIL ADDRESS  —  If you have a new Email Address, please let me know so we can update our records.  I only have the email address that you provided to the UCLA Admissions Office.
That’s it for now.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me (sherry@seas.ucla.edu), or we can arrange a phone appointment.   Take care, and as always…  Go Bruins and Dodgers!    – Sherry, Your UCLA CEED Counselor    =)

June 16

Hey UCLA CEED New Freshmen!   Hope you’re all doing well.  We will soon be contacting you all to RSVP for July 19th CEED Freshman Orientation, so be on the lookout for that.   I have 2 announcements:
=  TAKE THE MATH and CHEM DIAGNOSTIC EXAMS  —  If you haven’t done so already, and no matter how much Math background you have, please take the Math Diagnostic Exam.   And unless you are 100% declared Computer Major (students often change majors), take the Chem Diagnostic Exam as well.  The deadline for both is July 1st, but don’t wait that long.   Take them now.    Here’s the link:   https://newstudents.ucla.edu/programs/first-year-students/#tab-id-8
=  ON CAMPUS HOUSING  —  Some of you have informed me that you recently applied for On Campus Housing and have not received your Housing Offer yet.   Please note that you are all on our CEED Priority Housing List.   I contacted the UCLA Housing Office, and they told me:  “We are working on their offers, which they should get in the next couple weeks.” – Sherry, Your UCLA CEED Counselor    =)

June 21

Hey UCLA CEED New Freshmen!   Hope you’re doing well.   We will soon be sending the formal invitation for CEED Freshman Orientation coming up on Tuesday, July 19th, so check for our upcoming email on that.

Those of you who are majoring in CS, CSE, CompE, EE, or Undeclared Engr and pursuing any of these majors, Professor Smallberg from the Computer Science Department has prepared the attached document to advise students on whether to take CS 30 or CS 31 in the Fall Quarter.   I would strongly encourage taking his advice, as Professor Smallberg has been teaching the CS 31 and CS 32 courses at UCLA for decades.
If you have not done so already, please remember to register for UCLA New Student Orientation as soon as possible.  They are only holding a limited number of spots for CEED Freshmen in Session 102.  Students cannot enroll in Fall Courses until they meet with the official Engineering Student Affairs Counselors, and this happens during UCLA New Student Orientation Sessions.   DON’T choose Sessions 108-110, as these all directly conflict with CEED Summer Programs.   Here’s the New Student Sessions link:   https://newstudents.ucla.edu/programs/first-year-students/
Don’t forget to TAKE THE MATH and CHEM DIAGNOSTIC EXAMS before the July 1st deadline.  https://newstudents.ucla.edu/programs/first-year-students/#tab-id-8
That’s it for now.   Take care, and as always….  Go Bruins and Dodgers!   – Sherry, Your UCLA CEED Counselor  =)

July 21

Hey CEED Freshmen!   Hope you’re all doing well.  I have some important announcements:
=  For those of you participating in Session 102, please make sure to enroll in the CEED Recommended Courses we provided you at Tuesday’s Orientation.  Don’t let them put you in any “alternate” or “filler” courses, as they will conflict and mess up your schedule.  Most importantly, your specific level of Math Academic Excellence Workshops (ENGR 87 Discussion) is based on the lecture of that particular Math level course that we recommended, and the AEW is worth 20% of your course grade.   These Math and Chem lectures, as well as CS, are wide open right now, as each Math course goes up to about 200 capacity, and the Chem will be over 300.   UCLA New Student Sessions just controls the enrollment rates in each session for courses like Math and Chem.  But if your CEED-Recommended Math or Chem Lecture “fills” then just ask your NSA to assist you as a CEED Freshman to enroll in what you need.
=  CEED and the School of Engineering will be handling the ENGR 87 Lecture and Discussion Enrollment, so just make sure to leave those spaces completely open on your schedule.   I don’t know this year if they want us to wait until all of our Freshmen complete New Student Sessions before they manually enroll all of you into ENGR 87.  So don’t worry about this, it will get done, and I will keep you all posted    .
=  For those of you who were not able to attend CEED Orientation on Tuesday, please be on the lookout for Cathy’s email invitation to join us on zoom Saturday morning.
=  ENGR 87 TEAM RESEARCH  —  I will be contacting all of you again tonight to let you know whether you have been assigned to a Team Engineering Lab Research or a Team Engineering Project Design.   It’s about half and half.   Please note that I looked at the Top 3 Choices you provided (if you submitted the CEED Questionnaire Cathy sent), as well as the time frames for those different project design classes.  There were a LOT of course time conflicts that just were not going to work out and a limited number we could assign to each small design class (based on what you indicated on the green sheet submitted to me on Tuesday).    Anyways, we are hoping to provide each and all of you with wonderful opportunities to conduct cool engineering research projects in a team and definitely a valuable addition to your resumes!    =)

July 21

Hey Freshmen.  It seems like a lot of you did not read my last email, or maybe I was unclear.  So I apologize, and let me try again…
=  ALL of your Fall Classes are still WIDE OPEN.   UCLA New Student Programs is controlling the enrollment into these courses, but they will open again tomorrow during your Session 102 Enrollment Period.  If you have any trouble enrolling into the Recommended Lecture, just ask your NSA for assistance as a CEED Freshman.   Don’t let them give you any drama, just remind them that I met with all the NSA’s and that we asked them to assist you, as they always do each year.
=  DO NOT add any filler classes or GE’s please!!   This will mess up your schedules and create time conflicts.   You will all be enrolled into ENGR 87 soon, which is a 4-unit class, so just hang in there and don’t add any nonsense classes to your schedule.
=  Because some of you have changed your schedules, I have to re-do a lot of the research project assignments because now they conflict.  So if I haven’t contacted you yet, just know it’s going to be a late night.  But I will get back to everyone hopefully before midnight.   =)

July 22

Hey Freshmen, hope you’re well.  I was up last night until 12:30 responding to emails and just got to the office a few minutes ago.   I see that a lot of you (over 20) have emailed me, so please understand that it will take some time to respond to each and every one of you.   I’m here in my office (Boelter 6291) if you want to stop by.   And don’t worry, everything will work out.

July 23

Hey Freshmen!   Hope you’re doing well on this beautiful Saturday.

For those of you who attended UCLA New Student Sessions 102, I hope you were able to enroll in the Recommended Fall Quarter Courses.   Please remember that it is critical for you to be enrolled in the MATH Lecture that we recommended because your ENGR 87 Discussion (Math Academic Excellence Workshop) will be based on a specific Math Lecture for each level.   There’s only 1 Lecture of Math 1 and 31AL, so that should be no problem.
If you are taking Math 31A, 31B,  or 32A, please make sure you have enrolled in the Math Lecture we recommended.   If you are not, then please contact your NSA, give them your Name, UCLA ID Number, that you were in Session 102, and most importantly that you are a CEED Freshman.  And then ask your NSA to assist you with fixing your schedule.   You need their help because your own window of enrollment is not open again until mid September.
Please understand that ALL of these MATH and CHEM Lectures are still WIDE OPEN with A LOT OF SPACE.   The UCLA New Student Programs are just controlling the enrollment numbers and opening up a few spots in each session.  But they are very supportive of our CEED Freshmen to make sure you all get into the Math and Chem Lectures you want.     =)
I will be contacting the School of Engineering soon for their assistance to enroll those of you who were in Session 102 to get into ENGR 87, but we can’t do that if students are in the wrong lectures or filler classes, etc.
Have a great weekend, and as always…  Go Bruins and Dodgers!   – Sherry, Your CEED Counselor

July 31

Hey Freshmen!   Hope you’re all doing well and staying cool on this warm day.   4 weeks to go until Freshman Summer Bridge and CISE Move-In!!  The excitement is building!!   I have 3 announcements:
=  ENGR 87 ENROLLMENT  —  I spoke with the Director of the Engineering Office of Academic and Student Affairs on Friday.  Each year, they manually enroll each of our Freshmen into ENGR 87 Lecture and Discussion Section (Math Academic Excellence Workshop, group problem solving based on specific Math Level).  This year, they are asking us to submit only one list of our entire Freshman Class.   Many of your peers are participating in New Student Sessions up thru 107 and confirming their Fall Schedules then.  So I will submit everyone’s Names for ENGR 87 Enrollment right after Session 107.  This is still a month before Fall Instruction begins, so it will be fine.
=  SEASnet ACCOUNT  —  If you haven’t done so already, please make sure to establish your SEASnet Account.   Please go to this link and read through all of the directions and information:  https://www.seasnet.ucla.edu/apply-for-student-account/
=  FRESHMAN SUMMER BRIDGE ROOMMATES —  Please let me know if you would like to provide me with any Roommate Requests for Freshman Summer Bridge and CISE Programs.  You will either be housed in double or triple rooms with freshmen of the same gender.   They normally assign rooms for our CEED Summer Programs on 2 or 3 floors of one residence hall.
That’s it for now.  Take care, looking forward to getting your roommate requests, and as always…   Go Bruins and Dodgers!     – Sherry, Your UCLA CEED Counselor

August 17

Hey CEED Freshman Summer Bridge, BREES, and CISE Students!!    Hope you’re all doing well.   Just 11 more days!!  Can’t wait!!   Go Bruins!!!!   I have several important announcements:
=  REQUIRED GUIDELINES AND WAIVER FORM  —  Please find attached 2 documents that you need to review, print, sign, and bring a HARD COPY with you when you arrive on Sunday, August 28th, for the CEED Summer Program check-in:   The Housing and Instructional Guidelines   and   The Participant Waiver Form.  On the Guidelines Form, “Bridge” refers to both Freshman Summer Bridge and Summer Bridge Review for Enhancing Engineering Students.   You will not be able to check in without these forms, so please get this done.  EVERYONE (whether we are housing you or not) needs to turn these in next Sunday.   I would suggest printing/saving a copy of the Guidelines for yourself as well.  Freshmen, you will also need a Parent/Guardian Signature for the Guidelines form.  And a “Minor” is someone who would still be under 18 on September 9th.
=  CHECK-IN and ORIENTATION  —  Please arrive for CEED Check-In and Registration between 12 noon and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 28th.   We will be set up outside in the courtyard area between Rieber Vista and Rieber Hall.   The main front desk for all 3 Rieber buildings is in Rieber Hall — the cafeteria is there, too!   But you will meet with us first, turn in your 2 required forms, pick up our program schedules and info sheets, and then go to Rieber Hall Front Desk.    The Bridge/BREES/CISE Orientation for Everyone will be held at 4:00 on Sunday, 8/28, Room TBA.
=  HOUSING  —  As you see on the Guidelines, we have been assigned to double suites in Rieber Vista (2 in a room, 4 in a suite).   This is where they housed us before, and it’s very nice!    Make sure to bring your laptops and school supplies, along with your clothes, toiletries, and UCLA BruinCard.  There is a laundry room on the first floor.   I would suggest packing a nice shirt/blouse and slacks for the Industry Presentation — always good to make a strong first impression!
=  ENROLLMENT  —  You will all soon be enrolled into either ENGR 20 (Freshman Summer Bridge) or ENGR 22 (Summer BREES).   Many of you will also be enrolled into ENGR 21 (Computing Immersion Summer Experience).   Each one yields 2 Units of Pass / No Pass Credit, and you will all be considered UCLA Summer Session Students.   There will be no fees assessed for our programs.
=  COURSES  —  Everyone is taking 2 classes in the summer program.   Freshmen, you will all be in Math (depending on Fall Quarter Level) and either Chem 17 or 20A, or in the CISE CS 30 or CISE CS 31.   Transfers and Continuing Students, you are being assigned into 2 of your Top 3 Choices, which might have included CISE CS 31.
=  SEASnet ACCOUNTS  —  If you haven’t done so already, as a UCLA Engineering Student, please make sure to establish your SEASnet Account.  Especially if you are going to be in the CISE Program, but everyone needs to do this.     https://www.seasnet.ucla.edu/apply-for-student-account/
That’s it for now.   FRESHMEN, I will be contacting you later.   Feel free to email me (sherry@seas.ucla.edu) if you have any questions.   Looking forward to seeing you all in 11 days!!    And as always….  Go Bruins and Dodgers!      – Sherry, Your UCLA CEED Counselor
