The UCLA Center for Excellence in Engineering and Diversity (CEED) is looking for candidates to participate in its Research Intensive Series in Engineering for Underrepresented Populations (RISE-UP) program, during the Spring 2008 quarter. CEED students will have an opportunity to conduct research with a UCLA faculty member and receive a $1,000 stipend. The RISE-UP appointment for Spring quarter will be from March 31, 2008 to June 6, 2008. The minimum cumulative GPA required for RISE-UP Scholars appointed during the academic year (Fall, Winter & Spring quarters) is 3.0.
All CEED students interested in applying must do the following:

• Identify a UCLA faculty member (also referred to as the PI or Principal Investigator) with whom you wish to work.
  • Contact the faculty member and advise them that you are applying for the CEED RISE-UP Scholars program and would like to do research under their direction.
  • Let them know that if you are chosen as a RISE-UP Scholar, CEED will pay you to do research for them.
• Get the PI to assist you in completing the Research Information portion of the RISE-UP application.
• Have the PI provide a brief description of the overall project which includes:
  • The research objective
  • The motivation for the research
  • A description of your role in the project and how it fits into the overall scope

Sample copies of accepted Research Descriptions are provided for you and your PI, to use as a guide. Both you and your PI must sign the RISE-UP application, and no applications will be accepted without the accompanying Research Description. The deadline to apply for the Spring 2008 quarter is February 25, 2008.
If chosen as a RISE-UP Scholar, you will be expected to:

• Work 10 hours/week in research
• Keep a research journal recording you time and activity on the project
• Prepare and present a research poster at the CEED RISE-UP Recognition Luncheon and Poster Presentation Competition on 08/28/08 at the UCLA Faculty Center from 11AM to 4PM
